IRN (Invoice Reference Number) is a registration number provided by the authorised Invoice Registration Portal, as part of the e-invoicing mandate to establish the legitimacy of any invoice produced by firms. Read the article to know more about IRN and how to generate IRN via IRIS IRP…
Invoice Reference Number is also referred to as IRN. It is one of the essential elements of e-invoice under GST. The Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) uses the hash algorithm under e-invoicing to assign a number for that specific invoice when an invoice is uploaded to the IRP. Simply put, a hash algorithm is a function that turns a message or string of characters—alphabets, numerals, and specific special characters—into a series of numbers.
If the business has crossed the e-invoicing turnover limit and yet does not generate e-invoices i.e. their invoices do not have the official IRN assigned by IRP then the invoice will be considered invalid. The non-issuance of IRN despite being under the e-invoicing threshold will also attract penalties.
The following are the ways in which you can register your invoices on IRP:
Taxpayers that are under the e-invoicing mandate can log in to the web portal using their GSTIN details and input invoice information one by one or upload the invoice data in bulk to generate IRN.
Taxpayers with stringent security protocols can use an offline Excel utility tool that converts invoice details into a JSON file. For the purpose of registering or validating it, the same may be uploaded on the IRP's e-invoice website. Following that, a QR code and IRN will be produced.
Integrate IRP APIs with personal ERP softwares to get on-the fly IRNs. The Invoice Registration Portal can also be accessible to large taxpayers and providers of accounting software via the API integration method. Server information from their own systems must be registered with the e-invoice system for this reason.
Similar to the e-way bill system, the IRN can be generated and validated for invoices either individually or in bulk using the APIs. An IT-enabled invoice generation system with a static IP address, a pre-production system to test the API interface, and an SSL-based domain name are requirements for integration.
